Reinsurance broker Aon analyses the risk of natural disasters for its clients. To this end, address and building information from Belmap is used to enrich the client data so modelling can be done more accurately.
Aon offers reinsurance solutions and gives professionals advice about capital and risk management. One of the most important foundation pillars in preparing this advice is modelling all possible scenarios with regards to their financial impact on the balance sheet of the insurance company.
The challenge
The more detailed information insurance companies have about a building that needs to be insured, the more precise they can be in terms of mapping the risks. Besides address information, it is also crucial to gather data about the physical characteristics of a building, the surrounding buildings, the area, etc. A time-consuming process for which Aon Benfield called upon GIM's expertise.
Jürgen Wielandts - Aon: "For us, Belmap is a valuable source to be able to quickly and reliably identify risks associated with buildings."
The solution
GIM uses Belmap, the source par excellence for location-specific information on buildings and addresses in Belgium. Belmap integrates high-quality location data from different sources and consolidates them into 7 clear themes.
For each building Belmap includes physical characteristics such as surface area, height, building type and distance from neighbouring buildings. A distinction is made between apartment buildings and detached, semi-detached and enclosed buildings.
The result
Aon now has the necessary insights to determine the exact geographical position and characteristics for each address, down to the level of the individual building. This way the insurance broker can perform its actuarial assessments more accurately.
